Free-flow times; on game days, add 10 to 15 minutes and expect stadium lots to fill an hour before first pitch. Remaining parks (Goodyear, Surprise, Peoria, Glendale) are 35 to 50 minutes west.
Scottsdale Stadium: the Giants (3 minutes)
The San Francisco Giants have trained in Scottsdale since 1984 in a ballpark that sits in the middle of Old Town at Osborn Road and Drinkwater Boulevard. It holds about 12,000 with a grass berm in the outfield, and it is the one Cactus League park where the neighborhood is part of the experience: Old Town’s bars and restaurants are a five-minute walk from the gates. From Hideaway, walk 22 minutes down Miller Road and Osborn, or drive three minutes and park in the city garages and lots; on weekends, walking is faster than parking. Day games start at 1:05 PM most days, which leaves the evening for the Entertainment District.
Salt River Fields: Diamondbacks and Rockies (14 minutes)
Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, is the newest and most spacious park in the league, with lawn seating, wide concourses and the McDowell Mountains beyond the outfield. The Diamondbacks and Rockies alternate home dates, so there is a game most days. It shares Talking Stick Way with Topgolf, OdySea and the casino, so the day can start at the ballpark and end anywhere. Fourteen minutes from Hideaway via Indian School and Pima Road; the lots are large and paid.
Sloan Park: the Cubs (12 minutes)
Sloan Park in Mesa is Wrigley Field in miniature, with a lawn, a brick facade and the league’s biggest crowds. Cubs games sell out first; buy early. It is 12 minutes south on the 101 and the 202.
Tempe Diablo Stadium: the Angels (20 minutes)
Small, old-school and set against a butte near the airport. A good weekday choice when the bigger parks are packed.
Making a week of it
A typical rhythm: coffee on the patio, a 1:05 game, a swim across the greenbelt when the water is warm enough (it usually is by mid-March), then dinner and the Entertainment District 14 minutes away. With three bedrooms and a sleeper sofa (full-size luxury comfort mattress), Hideaway sleeps eight fans; with the grill and the 65-inch TV, night games on the coast are covered. Two covered parking spaces handle the cars, and Sprouts is a nine-minute walk for the cooler run. On Giants home-game days the city runs a free trolley from Fashion Square to the stadium gates; the trolley guide has the stops and hours.
Spring training overlaps the WM Phoenix Open (February 8 to 14), the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show (February 11 to 21) and Parada del Sol (February 6), which is why late February is the peak of the entire Scottsdale year. Rates and minimum stays are highest then; the last two weeks of March are a little calmer and the weather is at its best.
