Why golf groups pick a townhouse over a resort

A foursome or an eightsome at a resort pays for four rooms, four resort fees and a lot of lobby time. At Hideaway the group shares three bedrooms and a sleeper sofa with a full-size luxury comfort mattress, cooks breakfast once at the island, keeps the beer in the wine fridge and the clubs in the carport, and spends the money on green fees instead. The patio grill handles the second night. Old Town’s sports bars and rooftops are a walk away, so nobody is the designated driver.

Courses by drive time

Free-flow drive times measured from the home; add time during the Phoenix Open and spring training. Talking Stick, Silverado and Continental are the closest public tee times; the Phoenician is resort play; Grayhawk and Troon North are the north Scottsdale destination rounds.

A three-round weekend

Day one, fly in and play late at Continental or Silverado, both under ten minutes, then dinner in Old Town. Day two, an early time at Talking Stick (Coore and Crenshaw designed both courses) and an afternoon at the community pool or Topgolf, 11 minutes away. Day three, the destination round at Troon North or Grayhawk, then the airport in 23 minutes from the house.
