Scottsdale Fashion Square (3 minutes by car, 25 on foot)
The largest mall in the Southwest sits at Scottsdale and Camelback Roads, a three-minute drive from Hideaway or a 25-minute walk up Camelback. Anchors include Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Macy’s and Dillard’s, with an Apple store, a luxury wing of European houses, and a restaurant row that includes Nobu, Ocean 44 and Toca Madera. Parking is free and plentiful in the garages, and the mall is the answer to a 108-degree July afternoon.
Fifth Avenue and Craftsman Court (17 minutes on foot)
Old Town’s original shopping street, west of Scottsdale Road, is boutiques rather than brands: Western wear and boots, turquoise and silver, home goods, art glass, souvenirs with actual taste, and the bronze horse fountain at the center of it. It is a pleasant loop of an hour or two with a lunch stop at The Herb Box or Citizen Public House on the same block.
Historic Old Town and Brown Avenue (19 minutes)
The wood-sidewalk storefronts on Main Street and Brown Avenue hold the trading-post side of Scottsdale: Native American jewelry and pottery, cowboy hats, Western art, and gift shops that have survived since the town was a farming crossroads. Prices range from souvenir to serious; the reputable jewelry dealers will explain hallmarks and artists.
The Arts District (24 minutes)
Main Street west of Scottsdale Road and Marshall Way are the gallery blocks, a few dozen rooms of Western, contemporary, Native American and glass art anchored by Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West. Thursday evenings from 7 to 9, the ArtWalk opens every door with artists in attendance. Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art’s shop, on the Civic Center campus, is the best design-object store in town.
Scottsdale Quarter and Kierland Commons (17 minutes by car)
North on Scottsdale Road, these two open-air centers face each other across the street with the national and contemporary brands that Fashion Square does not carry, plus a dense restaurant scene. They pair well with a morning at the McDowell Sonoran Preserve or a round at Grayhawk.
Everyday and specialty
Sprouts Farmers Market (9 minutes on foot) covers groceries; Target is ten minutes by car at Talking Stick Way; AJ’s Fine Foods on Lincoln Drive (7 minutes) is the gourmet grocer for a dinner in; and the Old Town Farmers Market at the Civic Center, Saturdays October through May, is 14 minutes on foot for produce, bread and Arizona-made everything.
